I have a mommy!

Hello to everyone! Mommy's Pippin-pup went to the Rainbow Bridge in December after they spent 15 sweet years together, and mommy needed a new pup to share her life. She chose MEEEEE! My name is Rena, and I'm a one-year-old chipin (chihuahua-miniature pinscher mix). I have lots and lots of energy and love snackies and curling up with mommy in our big bed. I'm so happy to be adopted and have a home at last.

Dixie

 CW: Pet bereavement
My husband and I first met Dixie in July 2020, and it was only a brief introduction on our way to visit some miniature ponies who lived a couple of fields away from her, where a friend volunteered. Dixie was already mostly in retirement there, having been a showjumper and companion horse, but (as it turned out) not doing so well - particularly in the absence of her previous companion.

Her then owner wasn't in a position to provide the care that she needed and wanted to do the best for her - but that meant either finding someone willing to take on a 27 year old horse, or recognising that she wasn't going to make it through a winter without that care and taking the only other decision that would avoid her suffering. So after not much discussion, a month later Dixie joined the Whitaker menagerie.

We knew when we took her on that Dixie might not have long left - but with the help of our livery she thrived. She formed a close bond with her new field-mate, Sandy - another retiree who had just lost her companion the week before Dixie arrived.

Dixie may have been an old, gentle, sweet-natured mare, with a touch of arthritis in her neck, but she remained bright, alert, and full of energy - whether that was in-hand work around the school, charging across the field when she spotted if we had arrived (checking to see whether we'd brought apples, obviously - although she was still happy to see us even if we hadn't), or testing to see how fast she could push a trot with Rich jogging alongside her.

Alas Sandy's time arrived last summer, and Dixie struggled with her loss; there were other field-mates of course - horses are social animals - but none that she bonded with to the same extent. Dixie's weight dropped and, while she rallied a bit a couple of times, we knew this was likely to be her last winter. We had hoped that, with the spring grass, she might put a little weight back on and get one more summer before we had to make a decision - but, as horses often do, she had her own ideas.

In the end she went with little warning or fuss. This morning was clearly her time - she was found, unable to get up, a bit before 7am. The vet was called and helped her pass, quietly and peacefully, around 7.30am. We were able to get there a little after 8, in order to be able to see her afterwards and say our goodbyes; and then to spend some time with Athena while she was being taken away.

Goodbye Dixie. I'm glad we were able to give you two and a half happy years of retirement that you would not otherwise have had - you gave us so much joy in that time, and taught us so much; I would not change it for the world. Grief is the price we pay for love.

Happy New Year!

Our mommies and daddies might be partying it up tonight, so be sure to check frequently under tables and chairs for all those dropped leftovers and bits of yummy food!

Here's to a new year of cuddles, warm and loving homes, and good health for all of you. Demand more tummy rubs, head scratches, and lots of snacks -- we deserve them!

A rather typical conversation

Pippin: Walkies!

Mommy: Again? Now? Sweetheart, I just cut up a cold, crisp, delicious apple. Do you want mommy's apple slices to get brown?

Pippin: This morning I left a square foot of grass unsniffed around the corner. Quick, we have to go now before someone else sniffs up all the smells!

Mommy: *sighs* I can't argue with that.

Pippin: Hurry!

Mommy: *gazes at lovely apple slices* *grabs leash*

Our client

I cannot understand why our client shrieked early today.

I mean, just because the one she calls Tomodachi stuck one of his back paws between her lower paws doesn't give her permission to shriek like that. He just happens to be rather long... Scared the one she calls Maneki right into her favorite hiding place.

Oh well. It is time for breakfast and a nice drink of water. It may take the edge off of the noise coming from the other humans around us. Especially the one that keeps yelling about a locked door while trying to enter our territory when his territory is one door over... Then there's the loud noise from above. I don't like it when my scratching surface vibrates from the noise!

I hope that I can sneak out again to check other clients while avoiding all of the dogs and several humans.  Tomodachi is helpful with getting us through doors that aren't locked due to his length...

My lovely fur

Mommy says I shed 24/7, whatever that means, but especially a lot in the spring. The reason I'm sure she's delighted to find my lovely fur everywhere in the house is because I inspired a poem she wrote called "Ode to a Keyboard"...

Dog hair
Everywhere

How about you? Do you leave gifts of fur or feathers around the house for mommy or daddy? Do they pretend to grumble about it when dusting, vacuuming, or trying to get it off their clothes? (The only thing worth grumbling about, really, is when supper is late.)

Mommies are so funny

Mommy said she was treating HERSELF to new pillows. We both got a good laugh out of that one.

A Petchat Challenge!

Mommy has been teaching me a form of poetry called "haiku" (5 syllables-7 syllables-5 syllables). Let's show everyone how creative we can be! Here are my two entries:

Why are you sweeping?
All crumbs on the floor are mine
Put away that broom

The overstuffed chair
Is my favorite place to be
It's always nap time

Your turn! Here are some ideas for poems: squirrels, napping, mealtime, favorite foods, tummy rubs, rainy days, favorite toy, mischief, adventures, being loved, blankets, breakfast, chasing things, comfort, cuddling, curiosity, digging, dignity, dinner, eating, fresh water, frolicking, full tummies, getting your way, grooming, looking cute, love, lunch, making friends, midnight snack, nobility, patches of sunshine, pouncing, snacks, snuggling, swimming, taking walks, training humans, warm beds, warm laps...

Have fun!

I'm Pippin!

Hi, everyone! I adopted Mommy in 2010, and the past 12 years have been a happy blur of treats, blankies, walkies, ear scritches, tasty foods, how to chase squirrels, learning lots of new things, and moving from one side of the country to the other. I am Queen of the House, and life is good here. I look forward to meeting friends and learning about your lives.

This is me, always ready for the next belly rub.
